Local is " Lekkamos" with BAY FM

BayFM 107.9 is making good on the slogan ‘Our Community, Your radio’ with the launch of its exciting new campaign ‘#LekkaMos’.

The # LekkaMos concept, aimed at providing a platform of exposure for home-grown talent, is set to revolutionise both marketing of and appreciation for local talent, across all genres.

“As a radio station functioning in the Eastern Cape, we have recognised both the abundance of exceptional talent, as well as our responsibility to said talent. It’s with this in mind, that this concept was birthed,” said BayFM Acting General Manager, Angelique Graaff.

#LekkaMos is derived from Local is Lekker, a phrase often used in conjunction with music or anything home-grown. Mos, an Afrikaans word, implies that what has been said is well known or self-evident.

“This is exactly what we, as a station, discovered. Our local talent has unique appeal. Gone are the days when aspiring artists relocate to other provinces in an effort to establish themselves. With #LekkaMos, they can now step it up in their own backyard,” Graaff remarked.

With a listenership of 100 000, BayFM has the base to become a stepping stone for budding artists. #LekkaMos will create a platform for artists to show case their talent, by providing airplay to artists looking to break into the industry. This in turn provides the scope to harness local support and encourage greater awareness.

“#LekkaMos has the potential to develop beyond radio; it is however essential that we start somewhere. Local artists will soon know that BayFM 107.9 supports home-grown talent. Its #LekkaMos”, said BayFM Programs Manager, Luzuko Qoba.

The Lekkamos show, where only local music and artists will be featured, debuts this coming Saturday at 8pm.

Artists may visit for more information on how to submit music.

“The visible change in the attendees after merely days was amazing. From scruffy to clean-shaven, from sagging shoulders to heads held high, the change of heart has become apparent on their exterior”, said Schneider.

RIP my friend. Darren Roberts used to work here. One of my best friends. Then he moved to Algoa FM. I loved to talk to him on air. Such a humble guy. So sad that he is no longer with us. But God needed him in Heaven as he was an angel on earth. God picks the most beautiful fruit from the tree...

I miss you a lot my FRIEND. I will see you again.......

Insightful news and entertaining talks. The Dj's are funny as well as I like the music they play. My daughter even laughs when she hears me singing the latest songs and asks how do I know them well - Bay FM is the answer.

It's always insightful listening to Bay FM, not only do you get to listen to the latest music as well as classics, but they keep you up to date with what's going on and entertain the listener. It's the only station I tune into!

Bay FM’s catchphrase Our Community Your Radio gives an exact expression of the philosophy that is embedded in and which manifests itself in the everyday operations of the station; it is a true community radio service about the community as it serves and operate from within the community a service they can truly call their radio.

Bay FM is a responsible and responsive member of society and has a history of evidence to testify to its commitment and contribution towards community development. Evidence of some of the various community engagement activities can be viewed at and We however believe that the community being served by Bay FM should not necessarily be restricted to our allocated broadcasting area, but that we could make a contribution towards development in our extremely challenged rural areas in the Eastern Cape Province and beyond.

The following graphs and diagrams provide a synopsis of our current listenership which currently stands at 100000. Social media accounts also assist in getting our message across with Facebook (Main Page) having 7849 likes and Twitter a following of 4656. These numbers do not account for each show as most of them also manage their own pages / accounts. We are in the process of amalgamating all pages into one / provide links to current pages through the help of the main page.

In addition to traditional radio Commercials, we are always eager to plan ‘out of the box’ advertising methods which may include the following:

  • Outside/Direct broadcasts
  • On-air competitions and call to action initiatives
  • Sponsorship and renaming of particular/popular shows
  • Live interviews
  • Pre-recorded programmes
  • Advertising around our news, weather or traffic reports

  • Reaches people in areas un-serviced by mainstream media
  • Accounts for 22.5% of the total radio listenership in SA
  • Fastest growing medium in SA
  • Delivers niche markets better than any other medium
  • Programming has a local flavour
  • Maximum reach in areas limiting wastage
  • Low costing but delivers affordable high frequency reach campaigns
  • Seen by Government and others as a critical medium of mass communication
  • Approximately 6.3 mil adults in SA listen to Community Radio
  • Around 8% of higher LSM listen to Community Radio
